The Wildscreen Festival - International wildlife and environmental film festival
The Wildscreen Festival is an international wildlife and environmental film festival in Bristol, UK.
Wildscreen celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2006. The Festival has grown hugely over this time, and yet still holds true to its founding aim - to celebrate and promote excellence within the wildlife media industry, thereby increasing the global viewing public’s awareness and understanding of nature.
Wildscreen will of course also be looking into the future - the new technologies, the changing demands of viewers and commissioners; new ways of story-telling and the increasing challenges facing our natural world.
The Wildscreen Festival was founded by Sir Peter Scott in 1982 and held in association with WWF-UK, the British arm of the respected international wildlife charity which he also helped found. Held in Bristol, where it is now a biennial fixture in the calendar, its aim is to encourage and applaud excellence in the production of moving images about the natural world, and so increase the global viewing public’s awareness and understanding of nature and the need to conserve it.
Early festivals concentrated on wildlife film and television but it now encompasses other media, plus a lively programme of linked attractions, such as a training school, seminars, masterclasses, trade markets and many opportunities to share ideas and make new contacts. The centrepiece of every Wildscreen is the bestowing of its Panda Awards – the wildlife film industry’s equivalent of the Hollywood Oscars.
Today the Festival – and its Panda Awards competition – attracts the most famous names in wildlife filmmaking and conservation from all corners of the globe, and Wildscreen is internationally acknowledged as the most prestigious event of its kind in the world.
The next Festival takes place 15-20th October 2006, Bristol, UK.
