Hulu Breaks Records
Los Angeles based Hulu has become a television delivery sensation. But consumer opinions can be swayed when revenue models change.
Premium television content was delivered at no cost to consumers as a taste of the convenience possible... but now...
Since it's launch, the Hulu site has become a Web sensation with more than 40 million viewers in March 2010 watching 1.1 billion videos. That's an average of 2.6 hours per viewer, according to comScore.
Hulu has a variety of revenue models available to it -- from free content for some shows, to ad-supported models, and some premium content that people will pay for.
Subscription revenue models have had a hard time on the Internet -- for all kinds of media. With the proliferation of video available on the Web -- video is no exception to consumer expectations for "free". The old slogan that "information just wants to be free" keeps reaching up and biting producers in the "but not us'es". :-)
The iPad from Apple is being seed as a bandwidth hog, but beautiful. Platforms such as that one ... and mobile devices such as smart phones will force experiments in the marketing strategies tried... and selectively adopted by video content distributors.
We are living in interesting times!
