Create-A-Scape for Mobile PDA Learning Adventures
Mediascapes
A mediascape is composed of sounds, images and video placed outside in your local area. To see the images and video, and hear the sounds you need a handheld computer (PDA) and a pair of headphones. An optional GPS unit can automatically trigger the images, video and sounds in the right places.
To create a mediascape, start with a digital map of your local area. Using special, free software, you can attach digital sounds, pictures and video to places that you choose on the map (see below).
By going outside into the area the map covers, you can experience the mediascape. Using the handheld computer and headphones, you can hear the sounds and see the pictures and video in the places the author of the mediascape has put them. All sorts of exciting things can happen as you explore the mediascape.

Mediascapes
Mediascapes are a potentially powerful way of engaging with the world around us. Using PDAs they offer new opportunities to explore and interact with the landscape in exciting and varied ways. The award-winning Create-A-Scape website project aims to offer the inspiration for teachers and pupils to start using mediascapes, and to provide easy-to-use guides and free software (HP's Mediascape Authoring Toolkit) to help make mediascape creation as simple and accessible as possible.
Create-A-Scape
Create-A-Scape is a free teaching resource: www.createascape.org.uk. The website was launched in September 2006, and we are encouraging people to download the free toolkit.
The Create-A-Scape website is provided by Futurelab, with the support of the DfES and HP Labs, to enable teachers and students to create mediascapes as easily as possible and to find all the resources needed in one place.
FutureLab
Create-A-Scape was inspired by Futurelab prototype research projects which demonstrated the enormous potential of mobile technology for learning. Futurelab identified a significant need for a tool of this type among educators and, with support from the DfES and HP Labs, turned the idea into a learning resource that is freely available to everybody.
