Defining Casual Game Appeal

For a long time, what dominated the casual game industry was 'Try before you buy' games. A casual game had a Web version and to download the full version you paid $20! But that has changed.

Casual games can only be loosely defined as those titles that are friendly to new or occasional users, and are intuitive and accessible.

The mobile phone is the ideal platform for casual games, but phone play hasn't caught on, yet. Two market changes need to happen for casual gaming to grow into maturity:

  • There needs to be more innovation
  • The expensive download model needs to be discontinued
Games on Facebook and Yahoo enter into the new equation. Some of these casual games have been wildly popular -- like "Scrabulous".

The game industry as a whole is making clear efforts to appeal to the vast population beyond core gamers. As more and more players enter the casual space, competition in some parts of the casual game industry are becoming more and more crowded.
