Greener Practices Can Offset Industry Emissions

A UCLA study says that the motion picture industry is one of the top environmental polluters in Southern California. The report, done by the UCLA Institute for the Environment, says that emissions by vehicles, trailers, generators and other machinery help make Hollywood the No. 2 polluting industry in the southland. Only the petroleum industry fared worse in the study.

While acknowledging the steps taken by some individual productions to be environmentally responsible, the researchers pointed out that the culture of and structure of the industry impede improvements.

The study notes ways the industry can incorporate greener practices:

• Studio recycling programs
• Implement environmental considerations during the early stages of production
• Support organizations such as FutureForests or Native Energy to offset carbon monoxide
• Donation of set lumber and materials for repurposing
• Eliminate paper scriptwriting and editing through use of special software
• Use re-refined oil recycled from other vehicles
• Follow guidelines established by the Environmental Media Association and the Entertainment Industry Development Corporation
